Textile and mixed-media artist Jan Fraser presents Hono: Bound to the Land, an exhibition exploring connection to land, ancestry, and identity through felted textiles and paintings.

The exhibition title carries layered meaning: hono, a te reo Māori word meaning to join, connect, or laminate, speaks to both Fraser’s innovative technique and the themes woven through her work. Using laminated felt—a process where mulberry paper is integrated into wool during felting—Fraser creates unique surfaces that accept inks and paints, fusing textile craft with fine art. The exhibition features predominantly 2D felted wall pieces and paintings on canvas, alongside select wearable art.

This exhibition is deeply personal. Growing up on a King Country sheep and beef farm, Fraser brings her rural heritage into the studio. The wool for these works comes from Matakanui Station near Alexandra, where her father took his first farming job in 1951. Through her art, Fraser translates the colours, textures, and forms of the high country landscape into contemplative works that honor both family history and New Zealand’s wool industry.

Fraser’s work has garnered significant recognition, including 2nd runner-up overall at Alexandra’s Wool-On 2024 with her mountain landscape coat, first place at the Earthwork of Creation Wearable Art Show 2024, and features in Australia’s Felt magazine. Her practice represents an evolution from felted craft pieces to fine art for the wall, bringing a deep understanding of wool as both material and medium.
