Central Stories is delighted to present Where the Light Stays: A Journey Across Time, a father–daughter exhibition in the Henderson Gallery bringing together new work by Alexandra artist Jen Anderson alongside a retrospective selection of paintings by her late father, celebrated New Zealand landscape painter Douglas Badcock.
7 October – 29 November, Henderson Gallery, Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery, Alexandra
Jen Anderson picked up a paintbrush for the first time in decades at the age of 75. In the two years since, she has produced a striking body of work — bold, colourful and largely abstract or floral — drawn from her love of gardening and the light and landscape of Central Otago.
This exhibition is something of a homecoming for Jen: a chance to place her own paintings alongside her father’s, and to trace the quiet thread that connects two very different bodies of work — one rooted in the land, the other in colour, atmosphere and the act of noticing.
About Douglas Badcock
Douglas Badcock (1922–2009) was one of New Zealand’s most celebrated landscape painters. Born in Balclutha, he built a highly successful professional art career painting en plein-air, mostly in oil, and earned a reputation as one of the country’s leading landscape painters, with work held in the collections of the Queen of England and the King of Thailand. He placed second in the 1959 Kelliher Art Award and third in 1962, and his first exhibition, held in Wellington in 1960, sold out within two days. His works today are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery, the Museum of New Zealand, and the Suter Art Gallery.
Badcock is best known for his luminous depictions of the Queenstown Lakes district and Central Otago, though his travels also took him further afield — the exhibition includes works painted in Fiji and Australia, alongside scenes from Wakatipu, the Lindis Valley, Bannockburn and beyond, spanning from his boyhood watercolours of the 1930s through to his final plein-air painting in 2008.
