01-30 November 2025
Heafey Gallery, Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery
After turning 80, internationally acclaimed Central Otago artist Denis Kent held a retrospective exhibition at Central Stories in 2020. While that remarkable show spanning works from 1968 to 2020 might have suggested a culmination of Kent’s artistic journey, “Gone for a Walk” reveals quite the opposite. This new exhibition presents 13 recent works that showcase his enduring passion for painting.
As noted by Nigel Wilson, these recent pieces reflect Kent’s continuing creative energy, largely drawn from the memory of places he has cherished throughout his substantial career.
Kent’s distinctive style—realistic landscapes featuring atmospheric scenes of fishing and hunting groups—invites viewers to step into the Central Otago wilderness he knows so intimately. His special relationship with the region, particularly Mt Aspiring National Park, remains evident in this collection.
A prolific artist who has exhibited at every Central Otago Arts Society Blossom Festival show since beginning his painting journey as a schoolboy in Dunedin, Kent has been honoured with numerous awards including life membership of the Central Otago Art Society.
Join us this November to experience the latest chapter in Denis Kent’s remarkable artistic journey.
Exhibition runs throughout November 2025
