Following their highly acclaimed tours in 2023 and 2024, the versatile Douce Ambiance quartet is set to delight audiences once again. This talented ensemble of top Christchurch musicians—comprising Cathy Irons (violin), Dougal Canard (guitar), Bradley Grainger (double bass) and Doug Brush (drums)—brings exceptional energy and creative musicianship to every performance.

A Musical Journey Through Time

Prepare to be escorted through centuries of musical tradition with an exciting programme that spans rustic medieval dances, sublime classical pieces, light jazz, Irish melodies, passionate Tango, meditative Sting arrangements, and a healthy splash of fiery Gypsy music. The sonic landscape of strings—violin, viola, guitar and double bass—is beautifully augmented with drum kit and world percussion instruments including pandeiro and cajon.

This breath-taking concert captivates from start to finish, offering audiences a fascinating variety of musical styles and genres from around the world.

Meet the Musicians

Cathy Irons (violin, viola) performs regularly with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and tours throughout New Zealand with programmes ranging from baroque to jazz. Critics have described her playing as “sonic fireworks that dazzle with all their brilliance” and “characterized by inspirational musicianship.” She has graced stages at the Cavell Leitch NZ Jazz and Blues Festival, Dunedin Fringe Festival, and Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival.

Dougal Canard (guitar) is a highly sought-after multi-instrumental musician holding a B.Mus in jazz performance. His extensive experience spans rock, funk, jazz and show work, including performances with NASDA and the CSO.

Bradley Grainger (double bass) is an Ara Music Arts School graduate (Bachelor of Music) and accomplished electric and double bassist. He has collaborated with notable international artists including Andy Sugg, Steve Barry, and Stefan Nagler, performing at festivals throughout New Zealand and on Princess and Holland America Cruise Lines.

Doug Brush (drums) brings extraordinary versatility and international experience to the ensemble. He has performed with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand Opera, and artists including Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Broadway star Andrea Burns, the Topp Twins, Paul Ubana Jones, and Fiona Pears. He currently teaches at Christchurch’s Ara Jazz School.
