Otago Southland Embroidery Regional Exhibition

Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery is proud to host the first-ever Alexandra showing of the prestigious Otago Southland Embroidery Regional Exhibition, “With their Busy Needles.”

This exhibition brings together the extraordinary talent and creativity of embroidery artists from across the Otago Southland Region, representing 12 Guilds and approximately 300 members.

The diverse collection showcases the remarkable versatility and artistic expression possible through needle and thread.

Visitors will be captivated by the impressive range of works on display—from traditional techniques that honour centuries-old craftsmanship to contemporary approaches that push the boundaries of textile art.

The exhibition features pieces in a stunning variety of scales, from expansive works measuring 1.2 meters wide to intricate miniatures of just 2.5 centimetres.

“I can guarantee that viewers to the exhibition will be inspired by what can be achieved with a needle and thread,” says the exhibition organiser. “We hope we can showcase our art to your community and beyond.”

This celebration of textile artistry highlights the enduring cultural significance of embroidery while demonstrating its continued evolution as a vibrant contemporary art form.

Each piece tells its own story through texture, colour, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the rich tapestry of talent from across the Otago Southland region, on display for the first time in Alexandra.
