About Michael Harlow

Michael Harlow stands as a towering figure in New Zealand’s literary landscape. With a career spanning decades, he has published 13 books of poetry and received numerous accolades, including:

  • The 2018 Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Poetry
  • The 2014 Lauris Edmond Memorial Prize for Distinguished Contribution to New Zealand Poetry
  • The Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship in Menton, France
  • The Robert Burns Fellowship

Harlow’s works, including “Cassandra’s Daughter” (2005, 2006), “The Tram Conductor’s Blue Cap” (finalist in the 2010 New Zealand Book Awards), and “The Moon in a Bowl of Water” (2019), have captivated readers and critics alike.

International Recognition

As a representative of New Zealand poetry, Harlow has graced international stages, participating in poetry festivals across Colombia, Nicaragua, Romania, Venezuela, Mexico, and Italy. His collaborations with composer Kit Powell have resulted in over 24 performance works, showcased at prestigious events such as the Christchurch Sonic Circus Festival and the 40th birthday celebration of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
