From Nature Comes Fashion

Starting as a modest event, WoolOn has evolved into a prominent fixture on the Central Otago Events Calendar. What began with limited resources has burgeoned into a grand celebration of wool, drawing entries from across New Zealand and beyond. This growth underscores wool’s significance, not just for Central Otago but for New Zealand as a whole.

The breathtaking Central Otago landscape continues to inspire designers, providing the perfect backdrop for their creations. WoolOn bridges the gap between fibre, art, and glamour, showcasing bold, innovative designs crafted from the pure, versatile wool. All entries must consist of at least 75% wool, with nine distinct categories reflecting the diverse ways wool can be used.

Since its debut in 2004 at Molyneux Park Stadium in Alexandra, WoolOn has aimed to elevate production standards and deliver a fashion experience that rivals any in New Zealand. This event celebrates traditional techniques like knitting while also embracing contemporary designs and encouraging new talent.

Highlights include:

  • Streetwear and Special Occasion sections
  • The avant-garde Avant-Garde category
  • Collections, where designers present garments with a cohesive theme
  • Accessories and Craft sections showcasing broader designer talents
  • The Under 23 Emerging Designer Award and Novice section for newcomers
  • A special Recycled Category to spotlight wool’s sustainability and longevity
