In the years from 1865 to 1960, what we now call racism against the Chinese was undeniably blatant in Aotearoa New Zealand, and a poll tax was designed and imposed to keep these “undesirable aliens” out of the country. The Chinese people who did live here had to come to terms with this experience of racism, and formed their understanding od Western civilisation through their acute personal, social and political observations.
It is a wonder and a miracle that any Chinese people became Christians under these conditions, yet some European Christians were grasped by the love of Jesus Christ to reach out to the “aliens in their midst”, so remarkably, some did, responding to the message and showing the transformative power of Jesus Christ in full measure. The stories of these Christians are an amazing testimony to the gospel and an amazing part of our history.
